Four green fields and twelve gold stars
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to analyse the Ireland–EU relationship from two apparently contradictory ideas: that of Nationalism (long a dominant value in Irish politics) and that of Internationalism (as represented by IUreland's enagagement with European integration). Our core argument is that the potential contradictions in this relationship have in fact been managed with ease, and we develop a characterisation of the Ireland-EU relationship as being “nationalism in internationalism”.
