Contemporary evolution of torrential activity on the alluvial fans of the Lower Clarée catchment (Briançonnais, southern French Alps)

Résumé
The valley of the river Clarée is located at the northern limit of the southern French Alps. It is an area prone to recurring torrential activity because of the lithology of the catchment (dolomites, cargneules and Triassic limestones), its high relief, the presence of morainic and periglacial deposits, and its climatic characteristics involving summer storms. Many torrents exhibiting a range of morphological characteristics drain the valley slopes and a few of them were the object of works and reforestation by the Service de
Archive documents (watercolours and photographs from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries) are useful to assess the evolution of the environment of these torrents (fig. 2: A, B andC).
